Counselling

What is Counselling?

Counselling is a professional activity within a contractual relationship. The counselling process enables you to develop awareness, options and skills for problem management and personal development in daily life through the enhancement of your strengths, resources and functioning. Its aim is to increase autonomy in relation to your social, professional and cultural environment.

What can Counselling help with?

A difficult life event

Such as a bereavement, a relationship breakdown, or work-related stress

Difficult emotions

For example – sadness, anger, loneliness, self-esteem, fear, or rejection

Premarital

Can help partners identify areas likely to cause conflict later on—finances, child-rearing methods, career goals, and family dynamics, among others

A mental health condition

Such as depression, anxiety, or an eating disorder. Or to those who express a personal emotional or behavioral issue

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens in the first session?

You may choose to say what brings you to therapy. I usually explain my approach to therapy and do my best to answer any questions you may have. I will also ask some questions about you, what brings you to therapy and what your initial worries are. At the end of the first session we can agree to work together, or you may choose to think things over in your own time.

Are sessions confidential?

As an accredited UKCP trainee Psychotherapeutic Counsellor, I offer a high standard of confidentiality. Confidentiality is a fundamental element within therapy in order to provide you with a safe and private space to talk. I will not give information to your doctor or anyone else without your permission. The only time I might break confidentiality is if there is a serious risk of harm to you or others, and in very rare cases where required by law.

How long and how often are the sessions?

The sessions are 50 minutes each for individuals and 60 minutes for couples. They are on a weekly basis at the same time and the same place.

Therapy sessions give you the opportunity to talk about anything that is on your mind, and usually you will start talking rather than me setting the scene.

How does therapy work?

Therapy works best when we are both clear on what you want to get out of it. You may start just wanting to feel better. Later on, you may want to make specific changes to your life or make new decisions. I see therapy as working with my clients to help them to be the best version of themselves.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends entirely on your situation, the difficulties you bring and your personal preference. Therapy does not always offer an immediate solution to long standing and often, painful problems. There is no upper limit to the number of sessions, you may continue for as long as you feel the sessions are of use to you. We will review your progress together at regular intervals to help you with this.

About Me

I am a psychotherapeutic counsellor and instructor working with individuals and couples promoting mental wellbeing. My practice in Greater Manchester is a five-minute drive from the M62. I also offer sessions online via zoom or by telephone.

I will work with you to make meaning of your internal struggles to understand them better by identifying their root causes.

This is a collaborative process where I will provide you with a safe, non-judgmental space to explore your inner world and presenting issues. I believe strongly that therapy is a two-process between client and therapist.
